报告内容:

When a quantum system exchange energy or particles with the environment, its dynamics is profoundly altered and often described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Although such environments are ubiquitous in nature, it is still challenging to exploit non-Hermitian Hamitonian in genuine quantum systems. In this talk, we report on our recent realization of non-Hermitian atomic system with synthetic spin-orbit couplings in bulk and lattices. Non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupling for neutral atoms exhibits a parity-time symmetry-breaking transition across the singular point, so-called exceptional point. We will discuss how to obtain unprecedented chiral control of the quantum state around the exceptional point. In lattices, the realized exceptional point of the non-Hermitian band structure also exhibits the non-Hermitian skin effect, accumulation of particles around the edge of the system, which is accompanied by the generalization of guiding principles such as the Bloch band theory and the bulk-boundary correspondence. We will discuss our experimental observation of the skin effect.
